twiced !!

White people made that thin sheet of glass, Larry...*that's* the threat.
*and* we all know who owns the gas stations ! Big Oil Buddies- thats who !!!

Fist of Etiquette

If there's any justice in this world, they'll make Obama's chaffeur be Jessica Tandy.

Bush4Ever

We here in MaryLand are going to get an early Voting Law passed by our Enlyghtened Lyberal, I mean, Progressyve Lawmakers right after they pass more programs that will take more taxes from the wealthiest top 1%. So we'll be able to vote for Obama AND Mrs William Jefferson Clinton!!!

Kinky Bee

Lar,

I'm so sorry that you didn't get to fulfill your childhood dream of living life as a Vietnamese woman, who runs a brothel. However, let me encourage you to put on your mother's panties and robe, and live! Live your life to it's fullest potential!! Never let your dreams die! It's not too late, Lar. Or, should I say, Madame Larry Butterfly? Fly Away, Be Free!!

Dude

Anyone know where Ronnie Ray-Gun was going when he got plugged? Was it an annual meeting of the Jodie Foster fanclub?

JannyMae

Well, not only is Obama at risk for getting shot at the gas station because he's black, he's been singled out by that arrogant Aussie John Howard. How dare that racist Howard butt into our affairs! Unless he sends every Australian man, woman and child to Iraq to fight his friend, Bush's war, he should just shut up!

Methinks

Ah, yes! Yomama is so astute. A black man is very likely to get shot by another black man at any random gas station just for the hell of it. Who knew there were so many closeted Rethuglican gangstahs in the 'hood?

I can't remember a single day when a story hasn't appeared in my local paper about how YET another psuedo-black man got shot at a gas station.

Dave

I know how you feel Lar, I keep having a weird dream where I get sexually attacked by a group of 20 young Vietnamese girls that have on cheerleader outfits and riding boots and force me to play russian roulette.

but thats a story for another day....

Obmas's wife is right. All white people(progressives exculded)are a bunch of rascist trigger pullers. If the people vote the proper and non-rascist way and he wins, when he takes his victory walk down pennsylvania ave, it will look like downtown fallujah.(without all the marines killing innocent women and children)

Not to worry my progressyve brethen... I've got it on good word that Robert Byrd will be driving President Elect Osama around. Apparently Byrd thinks that Osama is Muslim/Creo and not black, so he's safe.

= = = I DONT MEAN TO HIJACK THE THREAD! = = =

Methinks,

I know this is OT but I finally read your comment on that recent thread which delved into issues of religion and policy etc!

I'd only say that your treatment of the issue of viability delves into the can of worms that makes the idea such an unappealing standard, even for negotiation.

My main point about first "Why" and second "How" we value human life, is that it may be preferable to venerate human life to a level simply because any - albeit reasonable - alternative may also permit what one could call (ornately) abominations. This is not to say that negotiating why and how we value human life is out of the question, but I personally think the imposition of strict bounds may be a good first principle, if not also practical protection against more pernicious ideas. How else can we refute terrible calculations such as how one life is a tragedy but a million is a statistic?

Basically, I like to weigh the consequent harm that may come from two valuations of human life. What are the competing worst case scenarios for each price, so to speak? Maybe this is an obnoxious metaphor but what "transactions" are enabled as a result of a given price?

For instance, if we erect a hierarchy wherein the value of a woman's choice is greater than the value of preserving/protecting/nourishing a pregnancy, we are well prepared to deal with unwanted pregnancies. But what do we lose? Obviously, we lose a person. What does that mean? Is that significant?

If we erect a hierarchy wherein we value human life from conception or implantation to birth "more" than a person's desire to destroy the zygote/embryo/etc, what do we get instead? And what do we lose?

Is it necessary to even define it as human? Couldn't be value/venerate these things as zygote or embryo as well? Are they worth less to us otherwise?

"Who knew there were so many closeted Rethuglican gangstahs in the 'hood?"--Youthinks

Who knew snorting Cocaine(which the CIA introduced into the 'hood) would make you a RepuKKKian. KKKrap! Another habit to KKKicKKK.

Teedie

But yeah, my problem with defining viability is its belief that science can define right and wrong. And given how wonderfully and ridiculously complex embryological development is, it seems inimical to both science and morality to fancy a given state of development and label it human. I.e. I guess I see it as arbitrary.

Like global warming etc, its an appropriation of some scientific ideas. I guess the broader question is who is appropriating what? What defines each side? Most people probably do not identify with abortion or embryonic stem cell research or euthanasia? What has convinced each side and what are they convinced of?

Dude

Are you suggesting that science can't answer the really hard questions like what is and what is not human?

Ye of such little science...

Dude! You've outdone yourself! My sarcastic evil can't touch your vile venom!

You are truly Satan's spawn... Hmmmm... must go back to my diabolical drawing board...

Teedie

Dude,

Care to inform us what science says about being human? Which journals are you fond of?

Teedie

Also, please tell us all about what peer-reviewed right and wrong you prefer and why.

Arbiter

"Care to inform us what science says about being human? Which journals are you fond of?"

-Teedie

Besides the Satanic Bible Dude... Or the NY Times...

Dude

"Which journals are you fond of?"

Do you mean scholarly journals?

I used to read “Science” and “Nature” when I was in school, but since I left the world of academia for the workforce, I prefer books to journals.

I am not a big fan of academia, but I prefer them a thousand fold over mystics.

Arbiter

"right and wrong"!? Dude's a Lyberal! He knows not of such trivial matters!!
